Helen is home to the United States’ longest running Oktoberfest. Hidden in Northern Georgia is a quaint, little Alpine village that is backdropped with the Appalachian mountains. The Oktoberfest in Helen runs almost twice as long as the real one in Munich. From polka dancing and beer stein holding competitions to traditional German fare with plenty of German beers to wash it down. And with it being less than 2 hours from Atlanta or Greenville it’s an easy weekend getaway!
Outside of Oktoberfest in Helen, there is plenty to do throughout the Summer too. Family friendly fun between river tubing, putt putt, shopping, mountain coaster, hiking, and camping. With Unicoi State Park sitting right above Helen, there’s always something to do almost anytime of the year.

What Is Oktoberfest in Helen GA?
Helen, Georgia started as a logging and gold-mining town that in the late 1960’s started seeing an economic decline due to those jobs slowly fizzling out. The local businessmen decided to transform the city into a Bavarian Themed attraction town – German restaurants and shops with German knickknacks like the Cuckoo Clock. Hence the Oktoberfest that is so loved in Munich became a natural addition to Helen’s attractions.
Oktoberfest is really like a fair, a beer fair lol. Lots of great food, dancing, beer, rides, and a way to let loose and have fun while dressing up!

This year it runs Thursday, September 10th through to Sunday, Nov 1st.
The Oktoberfest parade starts at Noon on Saturday, September 12th
There’s actually 2 separate beer tents in town to celebrate!
The first is at the Chamber of Commerce, also known as the Festhalle

Oktoberfest in Helen GA Tickets and Prices
Prices for the Festhalle are:
Monday – Thursday
- $10 Adults
- $5 kids (6-12)
- Children under 6 are free
Friday – Saturday
- $15 single day, $25 weekend pass
- Children are $7 for single day, and $12 for weekend pass
Sunday: FREE entry. Active and retired military: free with valid ID.
Entry into the tent at the Helen Central Plaza is free! Just need to show ID.
I highly recommend getting a plastic stein that they sell for $_. With the reusable stein, you get more beer with each refill. Pro tip – save the stein and bring it back next year 🙂

What to Wear to Oktoberfest in Helen GA
You by no means have to wear the traditional German attire, which is a dirndl for the ladies and a lederhosen for the guys. I’ve seen it all over the years – anything from t-shirts with a lederhosen screenprinted to the front or skimpy dirndl dresses to real deal authentic outfits.
I started with one from Amazon that I felt was affordable, yet not entirely too fake.

Beyond the Festhalle: Other Things to Do in Helen
If you’re looking for other things to do in Helen during Oktoberfest or even outside of Oktoberfest timing, there is SO much. I personally love to river tube here with Cool River Tubing. I’m not the best swimmer and I high key hate water but the tubing here is some of the best.
Camping is another huge part of Helen, with Unicoi State Park right up the road.
In town there is putt putt, tons of shopping, a mountain rollercoaster.

Is Helen GA Oktoberfest worth it?
If you have a free weekend sometime in September or October and you live within 3-4 hours, I definitely recommend stopping by even if it’s for a night. We make it a tradition with all of our friends every year and rent out a big house within 30 min driving distance.
Do you need tickets in advance for Oktoberfest in Helen GA?
No! There can sometimes be a line to get into the Festhalle, but it is pay at the door open entry with either cash or card. They give you a wristband and you’re allowed to leave and reenter throughout the day.
At the beer tent inside Helen Central Plaza, there is no fee.
What is the best day to go to Oktoberfest in Helen?
I personally love going on a weekend! I think you get the full experience. Yes it’s busy but it’s also the people that make it fun! Everyone is dressed up, drinking beer, dancing, and enjoying life.

Absolutely! Kids are always welcome in the Festhalle and there’s plenty of family adventure in town (putt-putt and mountain coasters).

There is plenty of parking to be found! BRING CASH! There is some free parking from the city, but expect those spots to go fast and be hard to get.
Is Oktoberfest in Helen GA Worth the Trip?
It’s a tradition we go to every year for the last 10 years or so….I’m definitely a huge fan. Is it quite like the Oktoberfest in Munich? No lol. It’s more laid back and easy to get around town with tons of shopping and food options. I just highly suggest grabbing the souvenir mug. It not only saves you money throughout your time at the festival, but you can keep it and bring it back each year too because you know you’ll come back to Oktoberfest in Helen 😉
